    Operator Derivation of the Gauge-Invariant Proca and Lehnert Equations; Elimination of the Lorenz Condition.P. K. Anastasovski, T. E. Bearden, C. Ciubotariu, W. T. Coffey, L. B. Crowell, G. J. Evans, M. W. Evans, R. Flower, A. Labounsky, B. Lehnert, P. R. Molnár, S. Roy & J. P. Vigier - 2000 - Foundations of Physics 30 (7):1123-1129.
Using covariant derivatives and the operator definitions of quantum mechanics, gauge invariant Proca and Lehnert equations are derived and the Lorenz condition is eliminated in U(1) invariant electrodynamics. It is shown that the structure of the gauge invariant Lehnert equation is the same in an O(3) invariant theory of electrodynamics.

The Purpose and Method of ‘The Pentckontaetia’ in Thucydides, Book I.P. K. Walker - 1957 - Classical Quarterly 7 (1-2):27-38.
A Principle of fundamental importance, if it is valid, for the interpretation of the Pentekontaetia is laid down by the authors of A. T.L. iii in its most rigorous terms: it is that Thucydides has set events ‘in proper order … without any deviation whatever’. The conclusion appears to the present writer to be founded ultimately on a false assumption about Thucydides' purpose in these chapters, namely that he set out to write an outline history of the period of fifty (...)

    The molecular biology of desmosomes and hemidesmosomes: ′What's in a name?'.P. K. Legan, J. E. Collins & D. R. Garrod - 1992 - Bioessays 14 (6):385-393.
Desmosomes are junctions involved in intercellular adhesion of epithelial cells and hemidesmosomes are junctions involved in adhesion of epithelia to basement membranes. Both are characterised at the ultrastructural level by dense cytoplasmic plaques which are linked to the intermediate filament cytoskeleton of the cells. The plaques strongly resemble each other suggesting a relationship between the two kinds of junctions, as implied by their names. Recent characterisation of the molecular components of the junctions shows they are, in fact, quite unrelated implying (...)

    Schrödinger at Oxford: A hypothetical national cultural synthesis which failed.P. K. Hoch & E. J. Yoxen - 1987 - Annals of Science 44 (6):593-616.
This paper considers a possible national cultural and scientific synthesis which failed to take place: namely the integration of the Central European theoretical physicist Erwin Schrödinger into the primarily experimental orientations of the Oxford physics of the 1930s. We also consider the effect of the Oxford social and intellectual atmosphere generally, incluing the persistence of previous traditions which undervalued Science relative to the Arts, and University research relative to tutorial provision in the Colleges. The Oxford situation is then briefly contrasted (...)

It would be difficult to name a more interesting scientific problem than that of knowledge of the brain, its overall mechanisms and its molecular nature. Rational management of the brain in the future and utilization of the principles of its functioning to construct various mechanisms to undergird present-day technological progress should follow as direct consequences of development of that sphere of knowledge.

  28. Theory-ladenness of evidence: A case study from history of chemistry.K. P. - 2003 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A 34 (2):351-368.
This paper attempts to argue for the theory-ladenness of evidence. It does so by employing and analysing an episode from the history of eighteenth century chemistry. It delineates attempts by Joseph Priestley and Antoine Lavoisier to construct entirely different kinds of evidence for and against a particular hypothesis from a set of agreed upon observations or (raw) data. Based on an augmented version of a distinction, drawn by J. Bogen and J. Woodward, between data and phenomena it is shown that (...)

Battle within: Shakespeare's brain and the nature of human consciousness.P. K. Johnston - 1997 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 4 (4):365-73.
Many avenues lead to human consciousness: introspection, phenomenology, cognitive science, philosophy, neurobiology. To these can be added aesthetics; both the production of artful objects and the appreciation of artful objects are characteristic of human minds. By looking at artful objects we can hypothesize why the human mind both produces them and responds to them, and derive from such hypotheses ideas about the nature of human consciousness, including its power to make present in the mind that which is absent from view. Gelliana Graeca.P. K. Marshall - 1960 - Classical Quarterly 10 (3-4):179-.
The Vatican palimpsest omits the word enthymemate and leaves a lacuna, thus showing that the scribe found it written as Greek in his exemplar. Now A has been shown to belong to the fourth century, and therefore its authority must be greater than that of the other manuscripts available for this part of Gellius. The same problem occurs in 12.2.14, non pro enthymemate aliquo, where Hertz goes against the Greek of the manuscripts and adopts the reading of Carrio. Yet an (...)

THE HOLY GAL - and European, medieval legends - a mysterious vessel, for the sake of approaching and engaging in its good deeds, the knights performed their exploits. It was commonly believed that this is the Cup with the blood of Jesus Christ, which Joseph of Arimathea gathered, who removed from the cross the body of the crucified Christ. It was often assumed that this cup originally served Christ and the Apostles at the time of the Last Supper; was the (...)

Childhood obesity is a serious problem for increasing numbers of children around the world. According to the International Obesity Task Force, 1 of 10 schoolaged children worldwide is overweight or obese, a number totaling 155 million; of these, 2-3% are obese. Prevalence is highest in the Americas and Europe, followed by the Near/Middle East, with smaller but growing numbers in the Asia-Pacific and Sub-Saharan regions of the world. In the United States, which provides the data for much of this report, prevalence (...)
